There’s an accurate saying by a famous author that “a town isn’t a town without a good local bookstore.” In our discussion of great local businesses in Santa Rosa, we’re going to talk about Santa Rosa’s local bookstore, Paperbacks Unlimited.
We believe that local businesses, like Paperbacks Unlimited, deserve the support of our community, so they can keep thriving and providing Santa Rosa with exceptional goods and services.
When it comes to buying books, there are a lot of sub par big box chains, where you can purchase stiff, overpriced books. Or, you could go to Paperbacks Unlimited and sift through their 4,000 square foot building and find affordable used books with character.
The beautiful thing about books, or art in general, is that it never goes out of style. No matter the age or condition of the book, there is always knowledge to be gained from its words and stories. Paperbacks Unlimited is dedicated to preserving the highest quality used books, so they can find a place in your home. In fact, by this nature, they’re more than a bookstore, they’ll also help you free up space on your bookshelves by letting you trade in your old books.
Paperbacks Unlimited’s Story
Like most local businesses, Paperbacks Unlimited didn’t gain success over night. Their business was built by a few people, who are passionate about books. In June 1972, Howard and Jill Brown decided to buy their favorite used bookstore, Dick’s Books. Dick’s Books was a small used bookstore in Mayette Village that Jill and Howard frequented for 3 years.
They found out that the previous owner of Dick’s was closing down the store, so she could go to college. Jill and Howard wanted to preserve their favorite used bookstore, so they quit their jobs on the fly and bought the business.
Since reopening the bookstore under the name “Paperbacks Unlimited,” their business has expanded. As the inventory kept growing, the size of their store needed to grow, as well. So, in 1978, they moved Paperbacks Unlimited to a bigger 500 square foot storefront in Washington Square Shopping Center.
Eventually, they had to move this store to a bigger location, and then again to an even bigger location. In 1984, Paperbacks Unlimited moved to their current 4,000 square foot building on Sonoma Highway, where they’ve been ever since.
